Arthur Wells came from Hobart, Tasmania. He was 22, and a Mechanic working in his home town, when he joined the AFC in Melbourne on 16 October 1916. After a very short period of training he embarked on HMAT A38 Ulysses in Melbourne on 25 October. Almost immediately after arrival in the UK he was found to be unfit for active service due to phthisis (now termed tuberculosis), and returned to Australia on Hospital Ship Karoola on 22 February. He arrived back in Melbourne on 10 April.
He died from tuberculosis at No 11 Australian General Hospital on 16 April 1917.
AM Arthur Wells is buried in Grave C E E 64 (GRM/3*) Pine Ridge Memorial Park, Coburg, Victoria.
