Alexander Thompson was from Prahran, Victoria, and was an Engineer, aged 27, when he joined the No 1 Sqn AFC in Melbourne on 20 December 1915. On 16 March 1916 he embarked on HMAT A67 Orsova in Melbourne for Egypt. He served with No 1 Sqn on the Egypt/Palestine Front through the War, though he suffered several bouts of illness that saw him hospitalised, and was promoted to Corporal in March 1918. On 4 March 1919 he boarded HMAT A17 Port Sydney for the journey back to Australia.

He died from malaria and pneumonia on board ship on 3 April 1919, and was buried at sea in the Great Australian Bight.
