Soley, Corporal Thomas (10)

Thomas Soley was born in Eltham, London and was a Motor Mechanic in Coley, Victoria, when he joined the AFC in Melbourne on 6 March 1915; he was 24 at the time. On 20 April he left Melbourne on RMAS Morea, before arriving in Basrah, Mesopotamia, on 26 May. As a member of the Australian First Half-Flight, he was absorbed into No 30 Sqn RFC as part of Indian Expeditionary Force ‘D’ during the Mesopotamia campaign. Promotion to Corporal came in November.
After capture following the fall of Kut-al-Amara in April 1916, he died while a Prisoner of War in June or July 1916.
Cpl T Soley has no known grave and is commemorated on Panels 43 and 65 of the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
