Russon, Sergeant Bertie George, (317)

No 67 (Australian) Sqn RFC

Bertie Russon was born in Townsville, Queensland, and was a Carpenter, aged 28, when he joined the AFC in Brisbane on 16 October 1915. He left on HMAT A67 Orsova on 16 March 1916. When he arrived in Egypt he was posted to No 67 (Australian) Sqn as a Corporal Motor Cyclist before he was remustered as a Carpenter in March 1917. In September 1917 he started pilot training and was posted to No 21 Training Sqn RFC at Ismailia in October.

He was killed in an aircraft accident at Ismailia on 25 October 1917 while flying Maurice Farman Shorthorn A2521. The Court of Enquiry determined that he had attempted a dangerous manoeuvre that was too difficult for an airman with his limited experience.

Sgt B G Russon is buried in Grave A 42 at Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
