Peel, Second Lieutenant John Clifford

John Peel was born in Inverleigh, Victoria, on 17 April 1894, and was a Medical Student when he joined the AFC as a Second Lieutenant in Melbourne on 16 October 1917, after serving in the Melbourne University Rifles of the AMF. He left Melbourne as an Honorary Lieutenant on HMAT A71 Nestor on 21 November. After arrival in the UK he was trained as a pilot before being posted to No 3 Sqn in France, where he arrived on 2 September. He was killed in action while on a photographic mission over the Hindenberg Outpost Line on 19 September 1918 while flying RE 8 E120, with Lt P Jeffers, who was also killed.
2Lt J C Peel has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
