Newton, Air Mechanic Class I Stanley Herbert (1778)

Stanley Newton was born in Kimberley, South Africa, and was a Fitter and Turner, aged 21, living in Kew, Victoria, when he joined the AFC in Melbourne on 10 February 1917. Following training at Laverton, he departed from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana on 16 June. He had further training in England prior to joining No 69 (Australian) Sqn on the Western Front in January 1918, where he served until taken to hospital due to influenza in October – just after returning from leave in Paris.

He died from pneumonia at No 3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, on 30 October 1918.

AMI S H Newton is buried in Grave S II K 30 at St Sever (Extension) Cemetery, Rouen, France.
