Needham, Cadet George Francis Jack (27571)

George Needham came from Burra, South Australia, and was working as a Bank Accountant in Adelaide, aged 26, when he joined the 14th Field Artillery Brigade in Adelaide on 27 January 1916. He departed from Melbourne on HMAT A30 Borda on 20 October 1916. After arrival in England he was posted to the AIF detachment working at the Commonwealth Bank in London before transferring to the AFC for pilot training in January 1918.
He was killed in an aircraft accident at Leighterton on 23 April 1918 while flying BE 2e B6176. The Court of Enquiry determined that the accident was caused by excessive strain on the airframe after a spin, which caused the right rear main spar to break.
Cdt G F J Needham is buried at Leighterton Church Cemetery, Gloucestershire, England.
