McCleery, Lieutenant Edgar Percy Everard

Edgar McCleery was born in Moss Vale, NSW in 1893. He was working as a Coach Builder when he joined the AIF at The Show Ground Camp in Sydney on 28 August 1916. His first posting was to the Dubbo Depot Battalion, followed by a course at the Signalling School at Kiama, before he transferred to No 4 Sqn AFC on 4 January 1917. He left Melbourne on HMAT A5 Omrah on 17 January. After arrival in the UK he applied for pilot training, from which he graduated in October and was commissioned. Promotion to Lieutenant followed in January 1918. He was posted to No 4 Sqn in France in March, but returned to the UK for further training before rejoining the squadron in July.
He was killed in action when shot down by ground fire during an attack on Lomme aerodrome at 08.25 on 17 August 1918 while flying Sopwith Camel D1961.
Lt E P E McCleery is buried in Grave VI I 15 at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelled’Armentiers,
France. He is commemorated on the Moss Vale War Memorial.
