Lord, Air Mechanic William Henry (23)

No 30 Sqn RFC

William Lord came from Melbourne, Victoria. He was a Moulder, aged 21, when he joined the AFC in Melbourne on 30 March 1915; he was serving in the 66th Infantry Battalion of the AMF at the time. He departed Melbourne on SS Morea on 20 April 1915 with the 1st Half Flight AFC to serve in Mesopotamia. After arrival, the 1st Half-Flight was incorporated into No 30 Sqn RFC. After the British withdrawal to Kut-al-Amara, nine Australian mechanics from No 30 Sqn, including AM Lord, were trapped in Kut with the garrison and were taken Prisoner of War following the fall of the city on 29 April 1916.

He died in hospital at Adana on 13 July 1916 while a Prisoner of War.

AM W H Lord is buried in Grave XXXI O 32 at Baghdad (North Gate) Cemetery, Iraq.
