Sydney Grigson was born in Muswellbrook, NSW on 22 February 1897, and was working as a Jackeroo when he joined the Engineer Reinforcements at Victoria Barracks, Sydney, on 3 September 1917. On 21 November he embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor in Melbourne. He transferred to the AFC on 15 February 1918, shortly after arrival in the UK, but became sick with bronchitis and was admitted to hospital within a week.

He died from pneumonia and heart failure in hospital at Aylesbury on 17 April 1918.

AMII S M Grigson is buried in Grave W 3 174688 at Brompton Cemetery, London, England.
