Frederick, Cadet Charles Clarence (2695)
No 5 Training Sqn AFC
Charles Frederick was born in Spokane, Washington, USA, on 7 February 1896 and joined the AFC in Melbourne on 3 January 1918. He embarked for the UK on HMAT A71 Nestor in February. On arrival in England he underwent preliminary flying training before being posted to No 5 Training Sqn for pilot instruction in September.
He died in an accident while flying Sopwith Camel F1335 at Minchinhampton on 4 February 1919. The aeroplane spun about four times from 2000 feet the before the right wing folded – probably due to the flying wires breaking due to excessive strain - while it was pulling out of a very steep dive. The Camel was found to be in good order and condition prior to the accident.
Cdt C C Frederick is buried at Leighterton Church Cemetery, Gloucestershire, England.
