Ferguson, Second Lieutenant Douglas Abbott

No 8 Training Sqn AFC

Douglas Ferguson came from Brisbane. He was a 26 year old Engineer when he enlisted in the 13th Battery, 5th Field Artillery Brigade in Brisbane on 23 August 1915. He departed from Sydney on HMAT A34 Persic on 18 November. On 8 July 1917, after service on the Western Front, Gnr Ferguson transferred to the AFC, and in January 1918 he was sent off for preliminary aeronautical training at Oxford. He was posted to No 8 Training Sqn for flying instruction in May and graduated in July, when he was commissioned.

He was killed in an aircraft accident at Leighterton on 18 August 1918 when flying Sopwith Camel C6746 during a practice air fight. The aeroplane collided with Sopwith Camel F4170, flown by Lt H Taylor MC MM, who was also killed.

2Lt D A Ferguson is buried in Grave IV B 9 at Brookwood (Military) Cemetery, Surrey, England.
