Cowan Lieutenant Gerard Henderson

No 2 Sqn AFC

Gerard Cowan was a 20 year old Farmer from Geraldton, Western Australia, when he joined the AIF at Geraldton on 2 June 1916, and was appointed to 11th Infantry Battalion. He left from Fremantle on HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 9 November. After a short period in hospital with mumps, he served with the 11th Battalion on the Western Front from June to September 1917, when he was severely wounded and evacuated to the UK. After discharge from hospital he was posted to the AIF Signal School in February, but transferred to the AFC in March, and was posted to No 6 Training Sqn AFC at Minchinhampton for flying training. After graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 1 October and posted to No 2 Sqn AFC in France, where he was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 January 1919.

He died from influenza on 22 February 1919.

Lt G H Cowan is buried in Grave V F 35 at Longueness (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
