Guy Bucknall came from Majorca, Cotswold, Victoria, where he was a Farmer before the War. He enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne on 10 May 1916, when aged 20 years and 11 months, and served in the 19th Depot Battalion at Geelong until he transferred to No 2 Sqn AFC in October. He departed from Melbourne on HMAT A38 Ulysses on 25 October 1916 and arrived at Plymouth on 20 December that year. He was sick in hospital with influenza in March and April 1917, and returned to hospital in June.
He was struck off the strength of No 2 Sqn in July as he had been in hospital for over a month. His file in the National Archives contains records of a number of telegrams to his family advising that his condition was improving, but to no avail, as on 4 December he died from tubercular peritonitis and exhaustion at No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, Middlesex.
