Members Area Outage

I have to apologise for the extended outage of the members area, but it was a victim of the Sydney storms in late April, well the hardware that designs it was, I lost my computer and associated components in a power surge while uploading the latest incarnation of this area. After a month we have moved servers and recovered most of the data from various sources as both the hard drive and backup hard drive were corrupted by the power surge. The delay was mainly caused by having to recode each page one at a time and add the content to it. With over 1000 pages this was a mammoth task that I thought I would never finish. While a small minority of people have been quite negative towards the site being off line and myself, I have received a great deal of support from many quarters and would like to thank all of those who understood the task at hand.

We have two new additions to the area, "In Their Words" which will host articles, log books, unpublished autobiographies, diaries and the like penned by the men. The second new addition is the long awaited Members Directory which will put you in touch with your fellow members. If you would like to be included in the directory please contact the Webmaster via email. In the email please include your name, address, contact phone number, email address and finally your area of WW1 aviation interest, this can be more than one area. The later will help you contact like minded members.

Society Patron

The Society is honoured to have Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC as our Patron. Air Chief Marshal Binskin is currently serving as Chief of the Defence Force.

2015 '14-'18 Journal

2015 Membership Directory

The 2015 Directory has now been published. If you would like to appear in our new 2015 Membership Directory, please contact the Society Webmaster, Andrew Smith. It's not too late!

In the email please include the following information, as this will appear in the directory;

Your name, address, contact phone number, email address and finally your area of WW1 aviation interest, this can be more than one area. The later will help you contact like minded members.

Society's Engines

We have now recovered the Society’s two engines from the FAA Museum at Nowra, with a view towards some form of restoration.  To facilitate this, it has been decided to form an Engines Working Group coordinated by Alex Stewart.  Hence, any members with a mechanical bent, or just enthusiasm, who think they may be able to offer some assistance, should contact Alex Stewart.  It’ll be easiest if you live in Sydney, but out of town visitors are welcome.

Society Trips - Great War Commemoration

We now have visited the Australian War Memorial and also have a trip to Point Cook in the pipeline. If any member has a suggestion for an outings/excursions/meetings location, please email our President Gareth Morgan with your suggestions.

Commemoration of the Fallen

As part of the commemoration of the War’s centenary, we have embarked on a project to mark the sacrifice of the Australians who served in the RFC, RNAS and RAF.  To this end, our database is slowly being expanded, as details of more and more Australians who served in the British services emerge (not as easy as might be imagined, as it’s hard to find information on Aussies who joined the RFC ‘off the street’ in the UK, but we’re trying).  Once we have a comprehensive list, the next step is to identify all who died; these men are not eligible for inclusion in the AWM Roll of Honour, but can be included in the Memorial’s Commemorative Roll, provided we have evidence of their Australian connection and service record.  In addition to the Commemorative Roll, it’d be good to see something tangible somewhere, e.g. some form of monument.  However, it’s not easy to determine just what and where.  If any members are interested in this project, or have ideas regarding a monument please contact our President Gareth Morgan.
