Societys 50th Anniversary
This writer believes that the Society is the oldest continuous type of its kind in the world. With that in mind a significant project has commenced.
The Societys committee has asked for members help in establishing a Society Archive of records reflecting the past 49 years. They hope that it will be completed by 2012 when the Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary. If you can help in this important project, please email the Secretary.
AFC Uniform donated to Army Museum of Flying – Oakey
In 1965 Lt. M.T.G. Cottam (pilot 4 AFC) donated his AFC uniform to the Society. Although great care has been taken of the uniform by those who have been custodians of it, 46 years of variying storage conditions has seen the uniform deteriorate somewhat.
At the 2011 AGM the membership unanimously decided to permanently donate Lt. Cottam's uniform the the Army Museum of Flying. The uniform was presented to the museum by our out going president Mark Lax at the end of November with a semi-official handover ceremony (see photo above). Afterwards, the uniform went into the freezer for a preiod of two weeks. This process kills any bugs, larvae, worms etc. that may have found a home in the uniform. Next, it will be cleaned and the moth holes repaired by their textile conservator before the missing bits (wings, medal ribbons etc) will be added. The intention is to put it on display, but not permanently.
